Validation of the long- and short-form headache diaries
MIPCA and the MAA have developed long- and short-form generic headache diaries designed for use by people with headache who require professional medical help for their condition:
- The long-form diary elicits comprehensive information about the headache, treatments taken and their effectiveness. It is designed for use by patients who are committed to the long-term management of their condition.
- The short-form diary elicits brief information about the headache and its treatment. It is designed for use by new patients on the initiation of medical care.
We are conducting validation investigations with the two diaries, to demonstrate their face validity, ease of use and clinical utility in groups of headache patients. Headache sufferers use the diary to record all their headaches for a 1-month period. They then complete a questionnaire assessing their opinions of the diary. The patients then make an appointment with their GP to discuss their headache management, using the diary to help in this. Following the consultation, the GP and patient both complete questionnaires assessing their views of the utility of the diary during the consultation.
The primary endpoints are the patients’ opinions of the clinical utility of the headache diary following 1-month’s use, the patients’ and GPs’ opinions of the clinical utility of the headache diary following a headache consultation and the consistency of data reporting by patients in the completed diaries. These investigations are being sponsored in part by educational grants from AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline.
